Dodge started out as an engine supplier to Ford Motor Company before the Dodge brothers decided to build their own car in 1914. In 1928, Chrysler Motors purchased the much larger Dodge Brothers Car Company and became Chrysler Corporation, quickly creating the Plymouth and DeSoto divisions to fill out the field.
Dodge became the performance division of Chrysler Corp. in the mid 1960's,and in the late 1970's eclipsed Plymouth as the most popular Chrysler division.
