Ford Motor Company was started after Henry Ford lost control of his first company, the Henry Ford Motor Company (which became Cadillac).  Ford Motor Company did three things in the early days of the 20th century which moved the automotive industry from makers of rich boys' toys to mass-marketers for the American family.

One - was making the Model T, the first practical and affordable mass-market automobile.

Two - was creating a moving assembly line to speed up production.

Three - was to pay his factory workers a wage that enabled them to purchase the automobiles they were making.

Ford Motor Company (FoMoCo) was sometimes a leader, and many times a follower.  Being in the hands of one family for the first half of the century made the company subject to whims that other automobile manufacturers would not have pursued.  In every decade, FoMoCo seemed to produce a defining product for a portion of the automotive market, and continues to be a leader in the global automotive industry
