Chevrolet has always been the General Motors volume leading entry-level division.  Even so, "Chevy" has also been the division with a few surprises.  The fiberglass-bodied true sports car Corvette, the rear-engined, air-cooled Corvair, and even the twin-cam all-aluminum Cosworth Vega engine, were all risks that other "low-priced" marques did not take.

Did You Know?
  • The 1953 Corvette was only offered with a six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission.
  • The 1955 265 V8 was the first eight-cylinder engine offered in a Chevrolet.
  • The fuel-injected 1957 283 V8 produced 283 horsepower.
  • The air-cooled flat six Corvair engine was influenced by airplane motors, not Porsche.
  • The turbo-charged 1962 145 flat six Corvair engine produced 150 horsepower.
